Idris Mustafa Barzani, one of the prominent leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and son of President Mustafa Barzani , after his participation in the Aylul Revolution and was the assistant to President Mustafa Barzani for military and social affairs, he was seeing his role. The loved ones were happy with the appearance of this leader and the enemies were saddened.
As well as the liberation movement of the Kurdish people led by General Mustafa Barzani, the leader of the Aylul Revolution, negotiations began with the Iraqi government and the role of Idris Barzani was impossible to deny, so the enemies had to find a way to get rid of him, and that is why whenever they found a way, they tried several attempts from every path.
After the March 11 agreement, the leadership of the Ba'ath Party requested from President Mustafa Barzani that they wished to appoint Kak Idris Barzani as Vice President of the Republic of Iraq, but Barzani did not accept this offer, and therefore Idris Barzani visited the United States of America and met with the high leadership and met with them, including Richard Helms, the head of the American Intelligence Agency, and the deputy ministers of foreign affairs and defense, although this visit was secret, but it is unknown whether the Iraqi Intelligence Agency was aware or not, these two steps document and clarify that Idris Barzani did not only have a social and military role, but was a prominent politician and relied upon.
All these roles and titles made the Ba'ath regime attempt to get rid of Idris Barzani and assassinate him. On December 1, 1970, to follow up and discuss how to implement the March 11, 1970 agreement, especially the fate of the Peshmerga and the formation of a border guard from the Peshmerga of the Aylul Revolution, Idris Barzani visited the city of Baghdad and met with Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, the President of the Republic of Iraq at that time, and Saddam Hussein, the Vice President of the Republic at that time, but during his presence, an attempt was made to assassinate him, Masoud Barzani in the book Barzani and the Liberation Movement of the Kurdish People, records this incident as follows:
For the purpose of implementing the March 11 agreement, especially the formation of a border guard, on December 1, 1970, Idris Barzani, accompanied by a number of Peshmerga leaders, including Hamid Barwari, visited the city of Baghdad and met with the President of the Republic, his deputies, and officials. It was supposed to stay for three days in the city of Baghdad, but a message was sent from the President of the Republic to stay for several more days, but Sheikh Babu, our uncle, was present in Haji Omaran for the purpose of the visit, he wanted to return to the Barzan region but was waiting for the return of Idris Barzani to return with him to the Barzan region. On December 6, my uncle asked me if I knew the date of the decision for Idris Barzani's return? If he was to return after three days, I would wait for his return, and if he was to stay for a longer time, I would return alone. I tried to speak with Idris Barzani via phone, but due to the bad line, I did not understand his words. After that, I called Sheikh Reza Golani, the police director of Erbil, and told him to try to contact Idris Barzani and tell him that my uncle is in a hurry to return to the Barzan region, if he returns within three days he will wait for you, and if you do not return, my uncle will travel alone. It was God's will that Sheikh Reza understood from my words that Idris Barzani's return is necessary and he must return immediately.
Idris Barzani sent the car that the President of the Republic gifted him, a Mercedes, to a workshop to fix some of its defects, but he did not wait for it to be fixed and returned by taxi to the city of Erbil, without anyone knowing of his return. After the afternoon of that day, they returned the Mercedes car to him, and it was scheduled that the next day, both Hamid Barwari and Muhammad Aziz, who accompanied him to Baghdad, stayed there and decided to return after the afternoon of the day Idris Barzani left the city of Baghdad. On December 6, both Hamid Barwari and Muhammad Aziz headed in the Mercedes car heading for dinner. It is clear that some mercenaries and Jash with the help of the Director of General Security, Nazim Kazzar, there was a plan to assassinate Idris Barzani. I do not rule out that some Iraqi leaders had a hand in this plan. The operation execution team set up several ambush points to stop the car and they thought that Idris Barzani was in the car. At exactly ten o'clock in the evening, bullets were fired at the car, and they thought that Hamid Barwari was Idris Barzani, because there was a resemblance between them. Hamid Barwari was seriously wounded, and as a result of these wounds, the wound turned into an illness and he suffered from it a lot. The car was hit by more than fifty bullets, but Muhammad Aziz and the driver survived miraculously and their survival was a miracle. The driver's name was Hassan Kawani, he was a careful and fast driver as he headed quickly from the ambush place and moved away from the place, and thus Idris Barzani's fate was to survive this terrorist attempt to assassinate him, because according to the belief of the operation planners, Idris Barzani was in the car that the President of the Republic gifted him, but in reality, at the same time, Idris Barzani was on his way to the embrace of the homeland without anyone knowing about it.
The assassination attempt on Idris Barzani failed and only Hamid Barwari was wounded. The Iraqi government, like previous times, cleared themselves of the incident and asked the revolution leadership to provide them with information for the purpose of arresting the accused and punishing them, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, through the Fifth Branch, provided Saddam Hussein with all the information about the incident. Saddam Hussein sent a handwritten letter to President Mustafa Barzani and reassured him that what happened was due to opposition to the March 11 agreement and there are people who do not want this agreement.
And the people who tried to assassinate Idris Barzani were uncovered and were punished through the Revolution Court, but those who decided to carry out the assassination remained secret until the coup of Nazim Kazzar in 1973, at which time the Iraqi government admitted that Nazim Kazzar was the one who carried out the assassination operation.
