After the Republic of Kurdistan suffered a setback, the Barzani forces led by Mullah Mustafa Barzani decided to return to their homeland once again. During the return, they faced a number of battles and clashes with the forces of the Iranian Army and the Kurdish and Turkish tribes loyal to the government. As a result of these battles and defenses, a number of Barzanis were martyred and wounded. On the other hand, they were able to inflict great damage on the Iranian forces. After the decision of war against the Barzanis was issued, the Iranian Army was able, on March 15, 1947, by utilizing the "Qarapapakh" infantry force and soldiers of the Kermanshah force, to occupy the heights of Khan Tawus Castle without a fight, and this occupation allowed the Iranian Army to utilize the importance of this location. At 11 a.m., with the help of the artillery force, the "Wazna" area was also occupied by the Iranian Army. At that time, a number of Barzani forces who were in Darband Shaitan Abad(1) arrived at that place, and they set off from the Wazna heights towards Khan Tawus Castle, and there they attacked the Iranian forces and the Turks from the "Qarapapakh" tribe and defeated them, and were able to kill and wound a number of them, and among them was a commander in the Iranian forces named Taimuri. However, despite all the courage shown by the Barzani forces in that battle, and due to the arrival of a support force consisting of the third branch of the "Kabiri" battalion led by First Lieutenant Nasir Pour to "Wazna" and Khan Tawus Castle to provide support to the Iranian soldiers, as well as due to the artillery shelling launched by the Iranian Army on the Barzani forces, these gunmen retreated to the "Pirnasar" heights and the village of "Darband" to protect their lives. In addition to that, the "Chwarbot"(2) castle fell into the hands of the tribes that were providing assistance to the state forces.
In continuation of that battle which continued in several areas, a section of the Iranian forces led by Colonel Ansari attacked the village of "Qalatan". In this battle, the Iranian forces shelled the area, and as a result of this shelling, "Sultan Agha", the brother of "Hamad Agha Mirgasori", was martyred. With the occupation of this area, a great threat arose to the city of Shno and the villages of the Shno plain where Barzanis were present.
