Shakhawan Abdullah served from 2014 to 2018 as a member of the third term of the Council of Representatives of Iraq. In 2022, during the fifth term of the Council of Representatives of Iraq, he became the second deputy speaker of Parliament.

On 6 November 2022, at the Fourteenth Congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in the city of Duhok, he was elected by the congress members as a member of the Central Committee.
